On December 9th, 2019, Matt Tavares (Author and Illustrator) came to visit Bowdoinham Community School. That morning we had an assembly and it was about Matt Tavares introducing himself and telling us about his life story and adventures in writing and illustrating.
After the assembly, classes rotated through and participated in a special activity with the author. They were each given a writing prompt and told to create their own unique illustration to go with this quote: “ I kept flying, trying to catch up soon I found myself in a strange place, unlike any place I had ever seen”. We were given paper, colored pencils and pencils without erasers. There weren’t any erasers on the pencils because it would mess up your picture if you erased too much. Matt also told us that “If you make a mistake, make it part of the picture”, so the pressure of being not perfect made the picture perfect.
After we did the activities we finished the pictures in our class & in the gym with Matt Tavares. Our drawings are out on display on the school walls next to the office. Overall it was great we all learned to draw from a mistake like “Picture Perfect” Our school also has a quote “In It Together: Meaningful Learning That Lasts”
